    Delonghi DEM 10 out of 10!, 11 Sep 2009

In May we moved into a 200 year old cottage that had been empty for 10 months or so. There was evidence of an old condensation problem on some of the walls many of which felt damp but there was little or no rising damp. As an artist I work with paper a lot & due to the high indoor humidity this was cockling & you could feel it was damp to the touch. I had assumed that opening the house up & heating it would start to solve the damp problem. The summer has been so wet here this wasn’t the case & I bought a Delonghi DEM10 dehumidifier. I chose this model because of the good reviews I had read which mentioned how quiet it was in operation. Within 2 hours it had reduced the humidity in my studio from 75% to 62% & after several hours this was reduced further to 52%. It is removing around 1 litre of moisture every 3 hours & my paper no longer cockles. The same results were found anywhere it has been used & it has reduced the overall humidity in the house by a good 8-10%. It is remarkably quiet & is no noisier than an oscillating table fan. I had planned to use it overnight when I am not working but it doesn’t bother me when I’m working. I would definitely recommend this product if you have a smallish house & noise bothers you. One down side is the electricity it uses. It is rated at 230W so uses about 1 unit every 4 hours, not a lot but in constant use 24/7 this adds up. The same would be true for any appliance but it needs to be born in mind when choosing something like this. After 2 weeks constant use it is not now needed all the time & instead is turned on as required. It appears very well made & I have confidence it will give many years service. All in all a very good product.

This review is from: De’Longhi DEM10 Compact Dehumidifier (Kitchen & Home)

    The Box
When the Dehumidifier arrived I thought wow! This thing is enormous. That is just the box. It is well packaged and actually quite small. Imagine an egg the size of half a pillow (the ones you use for sleeping), but white in colour. It has a handle for carrying and it is not heavy at all.

This product does not come from IKEA. No assembly required. Out of the box, it is good to go.

There is a transparent pipe/hose supplied with the unit. This is for the OPTIONAL `continuous drain’ function. Some people want to leave this unit ON 24 hours a day and don’t want to keep emptying the water tank. What you do, is drill a hole in a wall and put the pipe there so it drips outside.

    Humidistat
This unit has a humidistat. This means that if you set the dial to about half way, it will turn itself off when it feels that your room is dry. If you hang wet clothes on the radiator, it will sense the water and dry the air BEFORE condensation occurs on the windows.

    Sound
I have a hard floor. I put a newspaper under the dehumidifier and that has dampened the vibrations completely. If you have carpet, then good for you, you don’t need the newspaper.
The sound of the compressor is a low hum… something like a fridge.

For a dehumidifier, it is VERY QUIET… It is about as loud as the fans on your computer. I sleep with the dehumidifier on.

    Filter
This unit has a filter. This is not disposable, don’t throw it away.
This is a good thing. The filter is similar to those you would find in an air-conditioning unit. It is a flexible plastic filter. Just run it under the shower or tap for 5 seconds to clean it. It is not made out of cloth/paper and will dry very very quickly.
The filter is a GOOD thing. When it is clean it runs very efficiently. Without the filter, all the dust would block the heatsink/heat exchanger. So yes please use the filter and even if you don’t clean the filter, it will still work (just not as well).

    Running costs
The power consumption is 180watts. This is similar to two laptops or one and a half `normal light bulbs’.
Because of the humidistat, it turns itself on and off when needed so it is never running 24hours a day (unless you set it to continuous).
The power consumption itself is not much but think about the heating costs. When you open your window in winter the room goes cold. A LOT of gas/electricity/fuel is needed to heat the room again. This saves you from opening the window and losing heat in the process.

    Condensation
This stops condensation. Condensation makes mold damage to the walls ceiling and window frames, water damage to walls, floors, walls and of course can cause some unlikely water damage eg: you put your phone/wallet by the window and now your phone is wet and broken ect…

This product is 10 out of 10. Buy it.
